Hi everyone,
There were 40 of us when I started sending out this newsletter in mid-April. We’re up to 53 now. We’ve added 13 people in the last week alone. Thank you all for joining and being a part of this journey with me. This is only the beginning.
I’m VERY excited about the book club. Things that arise very organically and naturally have a certain magic to them. This has that feeling to me. I appreciate you all being a part of it and look forward to the discussions we’ll have.
Several of you used the Bookshop link to purchase Lies My Teacher Told Me to participate in the book club kicking off on July 6th. Thank you! The proceeds from your purchase support authors and independent bookstores.
The book is currently backordered on Bookshop. I’ve contacted Bookshop to get more information on when the books will ship/arrive. I will let you know when I find out more information.
If you do not get receive the book in the mail before our start date, you can access it through Hoopla or Libby, two apps that are both available on desktop/laptop and in the app store on your smartphone. I can send information on how to use them should we need it.
Reading Schedule:
Monday, July 6 - Sunday, July 12: Chapters 1-Chapter 3
Monday, July 13 - Sunday, July 19: Chapters 4-6
Monday, July 20 - Sunday, July 26: Chapters 7-10
Monday, July 27 - Friday, July 31: Chapters 11-13, Afterword
The Preface and Introduction are optional reading but I do find them helpful to contextualize the updates the author has made to the book and the reasons for doing so.
This is a rough reading schedule. Some of you have already skipped ahead. Some may lag behind. We can obviously read at our own pace but having a shared schedule can help facilitate weekly discussions.
I’ll be sending out weekly discussion threads on Wednesday mornings. These will help foster discussions around what we’re reading and hopefully prompt additional reflection on what we’re learning and how we might use it in our lives.
What is most important, however, is that we’ve all finished the book before our monthly discussion.
Regarding a Zoom meeting for all of us to discuss:
I want to give everyone as much time as possible to finish / catch up on the book before our discussion. In looking at the calendar, the final day of July is Friday, July 31st.
What is best for all of you? A discussion that Friday evening? Saturday (August 1) or Sunday (August 2) afternoon? A weekday morning the following week?
July 29 is also my birthday! WOOT! That weekend or the beginning of the following week would be best for me but let’s see what ya’ll are thinking. I’m happy to be flexible to accommodate.
Obviously, we may not be able to accommodate everyone’s wishes or optimal scheduling but I will do my best to make sure as many of us can be included as possible.
Please reply to this email and let me know. You can also comment in the thread on Substack.
Reminder: This is my first time running a book club. It started on a whim. Thus, we’re learning as we go. Your feedback is immensely valuable and generously welcomed. I’m open to doing what I can to make this the best it possibly can be and as valuable as can be for everyone participating.
We can always make adjustments as needed. :)
I appreciate all of you.
