Hey everyone,
Happy Friday.
I’ve been driving for most of the week. I left Houston, TX on Tuesday and have been driving 4-5 hours a day since then. It’s been amazing: great weather with mostly open road. Big blue skies and only a few clouds here or there.
I’m currently in Tucson, AZ at the Hotel Mccoy. It’s an old motel that’s been renovated and updated. It’s covered in murals and poetry from local artists.
Today is the last day I’ll be on the road. After two months visiting my parents in Houston (and dealing with the absurd heat), I’m ready to be back in San Diego.
I’m going to keep it short this week. Below, you’ll find the link to join our call this Sunday and the link to the next book we’ll be reading, How Emotions Are Made.
BOOK CLUB MEETING
Our book club meets this Sunday at 10AM PST. We will be meeting on Zoom.
Here is the link to join: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81328487385
Please consider coming even if you haven’t read or finished the book. My hope is that we use the book as a jumping-off point for a discussion. Having read the book helps but it certainly won’t hinder your ability to participate, listen, and learn from others.
I’m planning for us to meet for ~1 hour and largely have an open discussion format. My hope is that we use the book as a way to generate discussion, spark insights, and share stories from our personal lives that are connected to the larger themes of the book.
OUR NEXT BOOK
The next book we’ll be reading is How Emotions Are Made by Lisa Feldman Barrett.
Here is a description of the book:
The science of emotion is in the midst of a revolution on par with the discovery of relativity in physics and natural selection in biology. Leading the charge is psychologist and neuroscientist Lisa Feldman Barrett, whose research overturns the long-standing belief that emotions are automatic, universal, and hardwired in different brain regions. Instead, Barrett shows, we construct each instance of emotion through a unique interplay of brain, body, and culture. A lucid report from the cutting edge of emotion science, How Emotions Are Made reveals the profound real-world consequences of this breakthrough for everything from neuroscience and medicine to the legal system and even national security, laying bare the immense implications of our latest and most intimate scientific revolution.
You can buy the book on Bookshop.org by using this link: click here.
We had some trouble with Bookshop with Lies My Teacher Told Me but I’m hoping they’ve got things squared away and that ordering a book that isn’t as in-demand as Lies was will be an easier process.
I’m willing to give them a chance before finding another site to use. They have the book “In Stock” and ready to ship. They’re a great business with a great mission. I’d love to continue using them.
Let’s hope this time goes better.
We’ll begin reading How Emotions Are Made on September 1. That gives everyone two weeks to get a copy of the book.
That’s it for this week.
If you have any questions on how to use Zoom or access the call, please reach out. I’m happy to help get you set up.
I hope to see you on Sunday. Bring your favorite beverage. I’ll be drinking my coffee.
Be good to each other.

I just figured it out! Do you use Readwiseio? You can take screenshot of you highlight and Readwise will OCR your highlight and save to Evernote! Yay!
Kyle, I didn't get through Lies. I wanted to but life gets in the way sometimes. I wanted to share that I found both "Lies My Teacher Told Me" along with "How Emotions are Made" on Scribd. If you're not familiar with it, it's like Netflix for ebooks & audiobooks. Not every title will be there but if you are not looking to read the newest NYT best seller, so far the choices have pleasantly surprised me. The note taking interface is horrible but I'm here for the content buffet. Hope to be on today's call.
